This student-made YouTube video says it all about using “audiovisuals” in the classroom. Recently I gave a talk at another university and was shocked to find an overhead projector in use in the classroom. Ah, the satisfying squeak of marker on acetate! I suggested they sell the device on eBay to a museum and use the proceeds to fund acquisition of a computer projector.
We give a lot of lip service to the need for cross-cultural advertising campaigns to speak the language (literally and otherwise) of the target market. We need to take our own advice when it comes to talking to our young digital natives who are too busy Facebooking and Chatrouletting to watch someone write in squiggles on a piece of plastic:
